AMERICAN IDOL SEASON 6 HIGHLIGHTS
American Idol, Season 6 began on Tuesday, January 16, 2007. A massive audience of 37.7 million peaking to almost 41 million was drawn during the premiere episode of the season.
The top 24 contestants were Alaina Alexander, Amy Krebs, Antonella Barba, Gina Glocksen, Haley Scarnato, Jordin Sparks, LaKisha Jones, Leslie Hunt, Melinda Doolittle, Nicole Tranquillo, Sabrina Sloan, and Stephanie Edwards, for females; AJ Tabaldo, Blake Lewis, Brandon Rogers, Chris Richardson, Chris Sligh, Jared Cotter, Nicholas Pedro, Paul Kim, Phil Stacey, Rudy Cardenas, Sanjaya Malakar, and Sundance Head, for males.
Around 32 million votes were cast on February 22, 2007, and 4 contestants were eliminated. They were Amy Krebs, Nicole Tranquillo, Paul Kim, and Rudy Cárdenas. A.J. Tabaldo, Nicholas Pedro, Alaina Alexander, and Leslie Hunt were voted off the following elimination week. The final week of eliminations ousted Antonella Barba, Sabrina Sloan, Jared Cotter and Sundance Head, before the top 12 was announced.
The top 12 slowly dwindled down one by one each week, before the next American Idol was chosen. The theme of the March 13, 2007 show was a tribute to Diana Ross. Brandon Rogers was voted off on March 14, 2007. On March 19, 2007, all 11 remaining contestants chose pieces according to the theme of "The British Invasion." The next day, Stephanie Edwards was voted off. After Stephanie, Chris Sligh, followed by Haley Scarnato were voted off.
The Web site Votefortheworst.com encourages people to vote for the least talented performer each week. Sanjaya Malakar was endorsed here as the least talented performer. On April 18, Sanjaya was voted off, after Haley Scarnato.
The top 6 singers performed inspirational music as a part of the first ever "Idol Gives Back" telethon-inspired event, raising more than $60 million in corporate and viewer donations. None of the performers were eliminated, and the votes from that week were added to the votes from the following week to eliminate two singers. Both weeks saw an extension of the regular two-hour voting window, which was increased to four. In the end, Phil Stacey and Chris Richardson were eliminated.
The following week, the top 4 were coached by Barry Gibb, who then performed "To Love Somebody" on May 9, 2007. None of the contestants received excellent comments and reviews for their performances, and LaKisha Jones was sent packing.
